Clouds Taste Metallic, The Flaming Lips' gloriously strange 1995 album, returns as part of the Rhino Reserve series on limited edition 180 gram vinyl.

Arriving after the unlikely hit that put them on MTV, it caught the Oklahoma band at a crossroads. This was the last album with guitarist Ronald Jones, whose layered, shape-shifting playing gives the songs much of their character, and it sits just before the orchestral reinvention that would follow later in the decade. For many fans it is the bridge between their noisy indie roots and everything that came after.

Wayne Coyne's lyrics are full of surreal little stories and cosmic wonder, delivered with a cracked sincerity that makes the oddest ideas feel tender. "This Here Giraffe" bursts with fuzzy, euphoric guitar, "Brainville" bounces along on a crooked pop melody, and "Christmas At The Zoo" imagines setting the animals free. The closing "Bad Days" turns workday frustration into a strangely comforting singalong.

The production balances heavy, distorted textures with sweet melodies, with odd little details tucked into the corners of every track.

This heavyweight pressing gives a cult favourite the care it deserves, and it stands as one of the most rewarding entry points to their wonderfully weird catalogue.
