This Nation's Saving Grace is The Fall at their most hypnotic and, by their own prickly standards, most welcoming, the 1985 album that many fans hold up as the band's high-water mark.
Mark E. Smith's Manchester crew had been sharpening their abrasive, repetitive sound since the late seventies. By the mid-eighties guitarist Brix Smith had joined and brought a pop sense that rubbed against her husband's sardonic rants in fruitful ways. Producer John Leckie recorded the band in London, capturing a group that sounded tight, strange and oddly danceable all at once.
"Bombast" storms in on a pounding riff, and "L.A." rides a chilly, mechanical groove with Brix's vocals cutting through the fog. "I Am Damo Suzuki" is a tribute to the singer of Krautrock legends Can, its rolling rhythm a clear nod to their influence. "Paintwork" gets weirder still, with a section of tape accidentally erased during mixing and gleefully left in.
That mix of accident and intent is the whole point, and it gives the album its unpredictable charm. Smith's sneering, cryptic delivery sits on top of grooves that never stop pushing forward.
Decades on, it still sounds like nothing else, a record that rewards repeat plays and keeps revealing new corners.
