The English Beat's 1980 debut I Just Can't Stop It is pure nervous energy set to a skanking beat, and this reissue arrives on colored vinyl.
Known simply as The Beat back home in Birmingham, the band rose out of the 2 Tone ska revival with a sound all their own, mixing ska and reggae with punk urgency, pop smarts and the toasting of Ranking Roger. Dave Wakeling's anxious, melodic vocals and the veteran saxophone of Saxa gave them a warmth and wit that set them apart from the pack.
Bob Sargeant's production keeps everything taut and danceable. "Mirror in the Bathroom" rides a frantic, hypnotic groove into one of new wave's great paranoid anthems, and their cover of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" turns Motown heartbreak into a breathless ska sprint. "Twist & Crawl" shows just how sharp their songwriting was.
Beneath the bounce there is real bite, with the pointed politics of "Stand Down Margaret" sitting alongside love songs and late-night anxieties, all driven by one of the most nimble rhythm sections of the era.
Few debut albums capture a moment in time this vividly, and more than four decades on it still sounds like the best party in town.
