Soap-pink vinyl was the only sensible choice for this limited 2LP edition of The Dust Brothers' Fight Club score, the twitchy, wired soundtrack to David Fincher's 1999 cult classic.
John King and Mike Simpson had already shaped landmark records for the Beastie Boys and Beck when Fincher brought them in, and they threw out the orchestral rulebook entirely. Instead of swelling strings, the duo built the film's soundscape from breakbeats, distorted bass and sampled grit, perfectly suited to a story about insomnia, consumerism and a very bad influence named Tyler Durden.
"What Is Fight Club?" crackles with nervous electronic energy, "Stealing Fat" pulses with sly menace, and "Medulla Oblongata" lurches between skittering beats and woozy, druggy textures. "This Is Your Life" closes the album with one final jolt of attitude, a fitting send-off for a film that keeps rewarding repeat viewings.
The score sounds as fresh now as it did when the film first divided audiences, a reminder of how boldly electronic music could carry a major Hollywood picture at the end of the 1990s, and how few scores have matched its nerve since.
Spread across two pink discs, it is a sharp collector's piece for fans of Fincher, big beat and film music that refuses to sit politely in the background.
