Released in 1970 as The Doors' first compilation, 13 gathers exactly that many songs from a band at the height of its dark, dangerous powers.

It arrived while Jim Morrison was still alive and the group was riding high on the bluesy rebirth of Morrison Hotel, offering a neat summary of a run of albums that had changed the sound of American rock. Paul A. Rothchild's original productions capture Ray Manzarek's swirling organ, Robby Krieger's flamenco-tinged guitar and John Densmore's jazz-schooled drumming in all their glory.

"Light My Fire" opens the set with its baroque organ intro and Morrison's smouldering vocal, and "People Are Strange" brings a woozy, carnival-like melancholy. "Roadhouse Blues" kicks up dust with raw, boozy energy, while "The Unknown Soldier" closes things on a stark, theatrical anti-war statement.

In between, the set moves from crooning ballads to stomping blues, a reminder of how much ground the band covered in just four years together on record. Heard in one sitting, it makes a compelling case for the Doors as one of the most adventurous groups of their era.

For collectors, it captures how the band looked and sounded in its own time, just before Morrison's death turned the story into myth, and the original sequence still flows beautifully.
