The Cramps headed straight into the swamp for Psychedelic Jungle, their 1981 second album, and came back dripping with reverb, rockabilly menace and B-movie glee.

Recorded at A&M Studios in Hollywood and produced by the band themselves, it marked the arrival of Kid Congo Powers on guitar alongside Poison Ivy, with Lux Interior howling up front and Nick Knox pounding out the primal beat. Half the record is original material from Lux and Ivy, and the other half is a crate-digger's tribute to obscure rockabilly and garage singles of the fifties and sixties.

"Goo Goo Muck" is the standout, a leering, slinky stomp that found a whole new audience after soundtracking a famous dance scene in Wednesday. "Green Fuz" opens the record with a cavernous garage rumble, "Rockin' Bones" covers rockabilly wildman Ronnie Dawson, and "Can't Find My Mind" is psychobilly at its most deliciously deranged.

Lux swings from a velvet croon to an unhinged shriek at will, and Ivy's twangy, minimal guitar lines do more with less than most bands manage with a wall of amps.

This is the sound of rock and roll's weirdest, wildest back corners turned into a whole lifestyle, and few records have ever been this much fun to get lost in.
