Lux Interior and Poison Ivy brought their sleazy rockabilly circus to 1994 with Flamejob, here as an import pressing from Holland, and the tent is still on fire.
By the mid-nineties The Cramps had spent nearly two decades perfecting their blend of fifties rock 'n' roll, B-movie horror and garage punk, and Flamejob proves the formula hadn't lost a drop of its venom. The couple produced it themselves at Earle Mankey's Psychedelic Shack in California, with Slim Chance on bass and Harry Drumdini on drums.
Mean Machine opens with a revving, fuzzed-up growl, and Ultra Twist! is a lascivious dance-floor stomp that became one of the album's singles. Ivy's twangy, reverb-soaked guitar does the heavy lifting throughout, with a touch of theremin for extra spook. Their cover of the obscure rockabilly side Sinners sits alongside a wonderfully unhinged take on Route 66 (Get Your Kicks On), which turns the old highway standard into a hot-rod fever dream.
Lux is in fine form, yelping, crooning and leering like a drive-in villain, and the whole record crackles with the band's trademark trashy humour.
For psychobilly fans and Cramps loyalists, Flamejob is a late-period treat that shows the weirdness never wore off, and a riot from the first spin.
