The Cramps never went soft, and Big Beat from Badsville proved it in 1997 with a fresh batch of horror-movie rockabilly, trashy surf twang and filthy humour.

Two decades into their career, Lux Interior and Poison Ivy were still running the show their way, producing the album themselves with Slim Chance on bass and Harry Drumdini behind the kit. Released on Epitaph, it found the band sounding tight and energised, as if the passing years had only made their B-movie world more vivid. Lux even took the cover photo, keeping the whole package in-house.

"Like a Bad Girl Should" swaggers in with a sleazy, swinging groove and one of Lux's most gleefully lascivious vocals. "Sheena's in a Goth Gang" tips its hat to the Ramones while needling the goth crowd that so often claimed the Cramps as its own. "Hypno Sex Ray" crackles with sci-fi absurdity, and "Burn She-Devil, Burn" is a frantic bonfire of reverb and screams that barely lasts two and a half minutes.

Ivy's guitar remains the secret weapon throughout, all fuzz, tremolo and dangerous twang, and Lux is in unhinged, joyful form from start to finish.

For anyone who loves rock and roll at its most delightfully disreputable, this is late-period Cramps with every bit of the old menace intact.
