The Clean's Getting Older is a short, bittersweet blast from Dunedin's finest, back on 7-inch vinyl with both of its B-sides intact.

Released in 1982, the single arrived as the band led by brothers Hamish and David Kilgour, with Robert Scott on bass, was coming apart, closing the first chapter of a group often hailed as one of the first acts ever called indie rock. It followed the Boodle Boodle Boodle and Great Sounds Great EPs on Flying Nun, and it found them chasing something far grander than their usual ramshackle jangle.

"Getting Older" is their shot at a Wall of Sound, piling viola, trumpet, maracas and droning guitar beneath backing vocals from Chris Knox and Martin Phillipps of The Chills. The result is joyful and a little melancholy at once, a song about time passing that sounds like it never wants to end. On the flip, "Scrap Music" layers two performances of the same instrumental side by side, while "Whatever I Do Is Right/Wrong" drops the guitars entirely and lets the rhythm and voices carry it.

For anyone tracing the roots of the Dunedin sound, this little record is essential homework, and it remains one of the loveliest singles of its era. Three songs, a few minutes, and a whole scene in miniature.
