Sanctuary II opens the vaults on The Byrds at their most adventurous, a 2000 collection of outtakes, alternate versions and instrumentals from the late sixties.
This was a band in constant motion, moving from folk-rock jangle into psychedelia, studio experiments and eventually country rock, while its lineup changed almost as quickly. The Sanctuary series gathered unreleased gems from those years, and this volume leans on the sessions around Younger Than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrd Brothers, with a few later detours into twang.
Triad, David Crosby's frank song about a three-way romance, is the famous one here, the track whose rejection helped widen the rift between Crosby and his bandmates. Goin' Back appears in an early version of the Goffin and King song, Mind Gardens turns up as an instrumental that reveals the eerie backing underneath, and Nashville West shows the group's pivot toward bright, twangy country picking.
The instrumentals offer rare glimpses of the band tinkering with new sounds and textures in the studio.
For fans who already know the albums inside out, this is a fascinating peek over the shoulder of one of rock's most inventive bands, full of rough sketches and alternate routes through songs they thought they knew.
