The Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man is back on 180-gram vinyl, the 1965 debut that plugged Bob Dylan into a Rickenbacker and helped invent folk rock in the process.

Produced by Terry Melcher for Columbia, the album caught Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke at the very start of their story, a group of folk-scene refugees who had fallen hard for the Beatles. Their electrified take on Dylan's title song became a transatlantic number one and changed the direction of American rock almost overnight.

McGuinn's chiming 12-string is the signature sound, ringing through "Mr. Tambourine Man" and a gorgeous "Chimes of Freedom." Gene Clark's "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" is one of the great jangle-pop songs of the decade, and "The Bells of Rhymney," a Welsh poem set to music by Pete Seeger, shows the band's knack for turning folk material into shimmering pop.

Those soaring harmonies, borrowed from folk but sharpened by Beatlemania, make even the gentlest songs feel urgent and fresh, and the whole record still glows with the excitement of a band discovering its own sound.

For any collection built on the 1960s, this is foundational listening, and it still sounds like the dawn of something big.
