Byrds, the 1973 album that reunited all five original members of The Byrds, gets a limited anniversary edition on 180 gram violet vinyl.

Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke regrouped for Asylum Records, with Crosby producing the sessions in Hollywood late in 1972. Expectations were sky-high, and critics at the time missed the band's trademark jangle, but the record sold respectably and has quietly gathered admirers ever since. Hearing those five voices together one more time remains its great pleasure, and the mood is warm and unhurried throughout.

Gene Clark is the quiet star. His "Full Circle" opens the album with easygoing country-rock charm, and he brings a lonesome, aching quality to two Neil Young songs, "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "(See the Sky) About to Rain". Crosby takes the lead on Joni Mitchell's "For Free", a gentle reading that suits his airy tenor, and Hillman and McGuinn each add songs of their own to the mix, rounding out a record built on shared harmonies.

It's an often overlooked coda to one of the great American bands, warmer and more relaxed than its reputation suggests. For collectors, this violet pressing gives a fond farewell the attention it deserves.
