The Bouncing Souls' The Good, the Bad & the Argyle is where the New Jersey punk lifers first planted their flag, a debut bursting with goofy humour and sing-along heart.

Released in 1994 on the band's own Chunksaah Records alongside BYO, it gathered new songs with tracks first heard on their early seven-inch releases, and the title nods to those scrappy Argyle and Neurotic singles. The band produced it themselves, and that DIY spirit is all over its 12 quick-fire tracks.

Opener "I Like Your Mom" sets the tone in under a minute, all bratty grin and buzzing guitars. "These Are the Quotes from Our Favorite 80's Movies" is a love letter to Valley Girl, The Breakfast Club and Say Anything, while "Joe Lies (When He Cries)" shows the melodic instincts that would carry them for decades. Their ramshackle cover of The Waitresses' "I Know What Boys Like" is exactly the kind of left-field choice that made them a basement-show favourite.

Underneath the jokes there is real warmth, a sense of friendship and small-town escape that would become the Souls' signature as the years rolled on.

For pop-punk fans tracing the roots of the Jersey scene, this LP is the place where it all starts, and it still sounds like a party in a sweaty basement.
