Maniacal Laughter is The Bouncing Souls in 1996 at their snottiest and most joyful, a short, sharp blast of Jersey punk that clocks in at under twenty-five minutes.

The New Brunswick band's second full-length was produced by veteran punk hand Thom Wilson, whose credits include early Offspring records, and it caught Greg Attonito, Pete Steinkopf, Bryan Kienlen and drummer Shal Khichi at full tilt. This is the record where their mix of oi!-style gang vocals, skate-punk speed and sweet-hearted melody really clicked.

The Freaks, Nerds & Romantics became a rallying cry for every misfit in the pit, and Argyle bounces along on a gleeful, shout-along chorus. Quick Chek Girl is a goofy, lovestruck tune with a nod to a New Jersey convenience-store chain, while The Ballad of Johnny X brings in Johnny X himself on guitar and vocals for a rowdy closer.

It came out through the band's own Chunksaah label with BYO, wrapped in artwork by Kienlen, and it carries that do-it-yourself warmth in every scrappy, hollered chorus and every buzzing guitar line.

Nearly three decades on, it remains a fan favourite and the perfect way into punk's friendliest, most big-hearted corner, best played loud with a few friends yelling along.
