The Blasters aimed for the big time on Hard Line, their 1985 album, and came away with some of the sharpest American roots rock of the decade.
Brothers Phil and Dave Alvin built the Los Angeles band on a love of rockabilly, R&B, blues and country, with Phil's booming voice and Dave's songwriting at the centre. Produced mostly by Jeff Eyrich, who had attended the same high school as the Alvins, and recorded between Los Angeles and Nashville, Hard Line pushed that sound toward a wider audience. It also marked the end of an era, as Dave left the band shortly after its release.
His songs here are among his best. "Trouble Bound" and "Help You Dream" come with backing vocals from the Jordanaires, Elvis Presley's old harmony group, while "Dark Night" is a brooding slow burn that later reached a new generation through the film From Dusk till Dawn. John Cougar Mellencamp contributed "Colored Lights," and John Doe of X co-wrote two songs.
Gene Taylor's piano and the tight rhythm section of John Bazz and Bill Bateman keep everything swinging, with guests including David Hidalgo of Los Lobos.
For anyone who loves Los Lobos, X or Creedence, Hard Line remains essential listening, a proud slice of Americana before the word was everywhere.
