Future Me Hates Me is the debut that put New Zealand's The Beths on the map, and this pressing splits it across blue and red A/B side vinyl.
Released in 2018 on Carpark, it followed the band's Warm Blood EP and quickly earned praise as one of the year's sharpest indie rock debuts. Guitarist Jonathan Pearce produced it at his own studio on Auckland's Karangahape Road, and singer Elizabeth Stokes wrote every lyric, turning anxiety and self-doubt into some of the catchiest choruses of the decade. Stokes has described the songs as a series of telling-offs aimed at herself, and that mix of wit and wince is the record's engine.
Great No One kicks things off with fizzing guitars and a rueful hook that lodges itself immediately. The title track is built around the band's trademark stacked harmonies, a sound they would make their signature. Happy Unhappy is pure sugar-rush power pop, and Little Death, another of the album's singles, shows how much feeling Stokes can pack into a tight, compact pop structure.
The playing is nimble and precise, with guitar lines that dart around the melodies rather than simply thrashing along.
For fans who arrived with the later albums, this is where the formula was born, and it holds up brilliantly from first track to last.
