The Band's Northern Lights - Southern Cross reaches its 50th anniversary on 180-gram vinyl, honouring the 1975 album that found the group rejuvenated.

After a long wait for new songs, it was their first set of original material since 1971, and the first made at Shangri-La, their own studio near Zuma Beach in Malibu. It is also the only Band album written entirely by Robbie Robertson, and the songs carry a storyteller's sweep, drawing on history, migration and heartbreak with a novelist's eye for detail.

Acadian Driftwood is the centrepiece, an epic about the expulsion of the Acadians with lead vocals traded between Richard Manuel, Levon Helm and Rick Danko and fiddle from Byron Berline. It Makes No Difference gives Danko one of his most aching performances, and Ophelia is a jaunty, horn-flecked romp led by Helm. Throughout, Garth Hudson's synthesizers and keyboards add colour and shimmer that set this record apart from their earthier early work.

It stands as the final peak of the original five, a late flowering before The Last Waltz brought the curtain down. Half a century on, the warmth of those voices and the detail in Hudson's arrangements still reward a close, attentive listen from the first note of Forbidden Fruit onward.
