The Avett Brothers' Mignonette arrives on 180-gram double vinyl, a ramshackle and deeply tender record from the North Carolina band's hungry early years.

Released in 2004 on Ramseur Records, it found Scott and Seth Avett and bassist Bob Crawford playing like a front-porch string band with a punk band's urgency. The title comes from an English yacht that sank in the 1880s, leaving its stranded crew to commit an act that ended in a notorious murder trial. That dark maritime tale hangs over a set preoccupied with love, regret and the hope of forgiveness.

Nothing Short of Thankful bursts with banjo-driven gratitude, while Pretty Girl from Cedar Lane is one of the sweetest entries in the band's long-running string of Pretty Girl songs. Salvation Song is the emotional centerpiece, a hymn-like singalong that swells from a hush into something close to a choir. The brothers even make room for their father, Jim Avett, whose song Signs sits comfortably among their own, as though it had always belonged to the family repertoire.

Two decades on, Mignonette still sounds like a band discovering just how much feeling a few voices, a banjo and an acoustic guitar can hold. Spread across two heavyweight LPs, it gives that early fire plenty of room to breathe, and it rewards a full, uninterrupted listen.
