Testament's The Gathering is the sound of a Bay Area thrash institution getting heavier with age, presented here as a UK import pressing of the 1999 album.
The band's eighth studio album arrived after a decade in which metal had splintered in every direction, and Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson answered by assembling a lineup that read like an extreme metal summit. Dave Lombardo of Slayer sat behind the kit, James Murphy, whose credits include Death and Obituary, handled lead guitar, and Steve Di Giorgio brought his nimble bass playing over from Death.
Recorded at Driftwood Studio in Oakland and co-produced by Peterson and Billy, the record fuses classic thrash riffing with death metal weight. "D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate)" detonates from the first second, "Down for Life" locks into a merciless groove, and the longer "Eyes of Wrath" stretches into darker, more brooding territory before "Riding the Snake" puts the boot back in.
Murphy's solos are a highlight throughout, fluid and melodic against the rhythm section's pummelling precision, and Lombardo's footwork gives even the mid-paced songs a relentless forward lean.
Plenty of fans rank it among the band's finest hours, and it still sounds like a blueprint for how veteran thrash can evolve without losing its edge.
