Tennis signed off with Face Down in the Garden, the 2025 final album from husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, pressed here on Sea Glass colored vinyl.
After fifteen years of breezy, sophisticated indie pop, the pair decided they had said everything they wanted to say as Tennis and announced an indefinite hiatus just before the record arrived. As always, they wrote and produced it themselves for their own Mutually Detrimental label, with Moore on vocals, piano and synths and Riley handling guitar, bass, programming and engineering. It is a short album, nine songs in under half an hour, and every minute feels considered.
"Weight of Desire" was the first song shared, a showcase for Moore's warm, airy voice and the duo's knack for longing. "At the Wedding" followed, unfolding over four and a half unhurried minutes, while "12 Blown Tires" became the final single. "In Love (Release the Doves)" brings the curtain down with a brief, graceful flourish that feels like a wave goodbye.
Strings from Odessa Jorgensen colour a couple of tracks, and drummers Steve Voss and Dash Hutton keep everything gently in motion. For listeners who followed Tennis from the start, it is a fond and graceful farewell to keep close.
