Fifty years on, Ten Years After's A Space in Time returns as a half-speed mastered 2LP on clear 180-gram vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket.
By 1971 the band had already torn up Woodstock with Alvin Lee's lightning-fast blues runs, and they could have kept chasing volume forever. Instead, A Space in Time leaned into songcraft, acoustic textures and studio colour, producing the most reflective record of their career and their biggest hit along the way.
That hit is "I'd Love to Change the World", a hushed, strummed meditation on a troubled planet that suddenly erupts into one of Lee's most stinging solos. "One of These Days" opens the album with a slow-burning harmonica blues that keeps tightening its grip, while "Hard Monkeys" and "Let the Sky Fall" show how gracefully the band could fold psychedelic shading into their boogie.
This edition offers two ways in. The first disc carries a 2023 mix by Chris Kimsey, a fitting choice since he engineered the original sessions, and the second keeps the 1971 mix exactly as fans first heard it. Hearing them side by side is a treat for anyone who knows every bend of Lee's guitar.
For classic rock collectors, this is a handsome way to own a record that proved there was more to Ten Years After than speed.
