Laramie's finest buzzsaw merchants keep the Ramones flame burning bright on Stay Rad!, Teenage Bottlerocket's 2019 Fat Wreck Chords album, back in the racks on tan vinyl.
The Wyoming band built their name on short, loud, hook-stuffed songs about monsters, girls and boredom, and Stay Rad! arrived as their first full-length since the death of founding drummer Brandon Carlisle. His twin brother Ray and guitarist Kody Templeman carried on trading lead vocals, and the record they made at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado, sounds like a band choosing joy on purpose.
Fourteen songs whip past in barely more than half an hour. "You Don't Get the Joke" kicks things off with chugging downstrokes and a chorus you can sing after one listen, "Death Kart" revs like a cartoon hot rod, and "Creature from the Black Metal Lagoon" mashes up B-movie horror and metal parody with a big grin. Then there's "The First Time That I Did Acid Was the Last Time That I Did Acid," a song that tells you everything you need to know in its title alone.
It's goofy, heartfelt and relentlessly catchy, exactly what pop-punk should be when it isn't trying too hard. Drop the needle, turn it up and let the sugar rush do the rest of the work.
