Tears for Fears chased perfection for years to make The Seeds of Love, and this limited deluxe edition presents their 1989 album on blue marble double vinyl.

After the global success of Songs from the Big Chair, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith could simply have repeated the formula. Instead they tore it up, spending a fortune and what felt like an eternity in the studio chasing a richer, more organic sound steeped in soul, jazz, gospel and late-period Beatles psychedelia. The sessions were famously exhausting, but the album that emerged is lush, ambitious and deeply felt.

Sowing the Seeds of Love is the most obvious Beatles tribute, a kaleidoscopic singalong with a pointed political edge. Woman in Chains brings in the soaring voice of Oleta Adams, whom the duo discovered singing in a Kansas City hotel bar, with Phil Collins on drums, and it remains one of the most moving songs in their catalogue. Advice for the Young at Heart offers breezy, bittersweet relief, while Bad Man's Song stretches out into gospel-tinged grandeur.
