Tash Sultana's Notion returns on silver vinyl with a poster, a gleaming reissue of the 2016 EP that turned a Melbourne loop-pedal virtuoso into a global name.
Before the big stages, Sultana built a following with home-recorded performances, layering guitar, keys, beats and vocals live, one loop at a time. Notion captured that one-person-band magic in a studio setting, released through their own Lonely Lands label, and it travelled far beyond Australia. It went gold at home, picked up a run of ARIA Award nominations and set up everything that followed.
"Jungle" is the breakout, a hypnotic, ever-building groove that shifts from dreamy to fierce, with guitar work that wanders deep into psychedelic territory. "Gemini" and the title track show off a softer, soul-leaning side of the same sound, while the two-part "Big Smoke" closes the set with more than 20 minutes of live improvisation, the closest thing on record to standing in front of Sultana's stage show.
Six tracks, endless replay value and a striking silver finish make this an easy one to keep within reach of the turntable. For fans who first found Sultana through a viral clip, this is the record that proved the talent was the real deal.
