Taking Back Sunday's Where You Want to Be is the sound of a band rebuilding itself mid-flight and coming out louder and stranger for it.

After guitarist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper walked out in 2003, Adam Lazzara and company recruited Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano and paid for the sessions themselves. Released on Victory in 2004, it took the Long Island band from emo cult heroes to a genuine mainstream force.

Lou Giordano produced, keeping the guitars bright and the vocal trade-offs front and centre. "A Decade Under the Influence" is the obvious calling card, all call-and-response hooks and nervy momentum, while "This Photograph Is Proof (I Know You Know)" turns heartbreak into something you can shout along to. Opener "Set Phasers to Stun" wastes no time, and "New American Classic" slows the pulse for a rare moment of tenderness.

Mascherino's harmonies give Lazzara a sparring partner, and that push and pull is what makes the record crackle. Lyrically it is all wounded pride, jealousy and late-night overthinking, delivered with the theatrical swagger that made this band a live obsession.

For anyone who wore out the CD in a car with the windows down, this single LP puts the second Taking Back Sunday album back where it belongs: loud, on a turntable and taken very personally.
