Suzanne Vega's Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles returns as a gold vinyl reissue, a fitting shine for an album steeped in tarot imagery and earthly matters.
Released in 2014, it was her first album of new songs in seven years. Vega had been collecting melodies and lyric fragments for a long while, and she shaped them with long-time guitarist and producer Gerry Leonard, road-testing the material on tour before recording it in upstate New York. The result is a wry, spiritual and grounded record, full of characters wrestling with faith, luck and fate.
"Crack in the Wall" opens the record, and "I Never Wear White" swaggers in soon after, Vega cheerfully pledging allegiance to darker colours. "Don't Uncork What You Can't Contain" surprises by interpolating 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" into its brooding frame. "Song of the Stoic" returns to the character from "Luka," looking back on his life as an adult.
Guests including Larry Campbell on banjo and mandolin and bassist Tony Levin add texture, and trumpeter Alison Balsom lifts the closing track.
On gold vinyl, it is a handsome home for one of Vega's most quietly rewarding records, ideal for fans who have followed her since Solitude Standing.
