The Smoke of Hell is Supersuckers' 1992 debut album for Sub Pop, a greasy, beer-soaked blast of punk-fuelled rock and roll, reissued here on red vinyl.
The band formed in Tucson before relocating to Seattle, landing at Sub Pop just as the label's grunge acts were taking over the world. Supersuckers had no interest in brooding. Led by singer and bassist Eddie Spaghetti, they leaned into swagger and speed and a cartoonish, devil-may-care persona, sounding like Motörhead and the Ramones sharing a pitcher in a desert dive bar.
"Coattail Rider" sets the pace with a revved-up riff and a sneer, while "Hell City, Hell" leans hard into the band's love of horns-up mythology. "Hot Rod Rally" is exactly what the title promises, all burning rubber and revving engines, and "Thinkin' 'Bout Revenge" closes things out with a wicked grin and one last burst of noise.
Fourteen songs fly past at a gallop. The guitars are loud and loose, the choruses are built for shouting back, and the lyrics treat sin, booze and bad decisions as a full-time hobby.
Supersuckers would go on to call themselves the greatest rock and roll band in the world, and this red-hot debut makes a pretty convincing opening argument.
