Superchunk’s 2018 return is as furious as it is fun. Written in the emotional aftershocks of the 2016 election, What a Time to Be Alive channels outrage, anxiety, and resilience into a sharp, loud, and cathartic burst of punk-pop energy.
From the title track’s opening blast to the biting punch of “Cloud of Hate” and the anthemic edge of “Break the Glass,” the record takes no prisoners. Tracks like “Erasure,” featuring Katie Crutchfield and Stephin Merritt, dig deeper into themes of resistance and survival, while “Lost My Brain” and “All for You” mix urgency with a streak of dark humor. This is Superchunk rallying against the noise of the world with even more glorious noise of their own.
Recorded and mixed by Beau Sorenson (who, yes, had to be asked to turn the guitars down — but only a little), the album also boasts the most guest vocalists in the band’s history. Contributions from Sabrina Ellis, David Bazan, Skylar Gudasz, Merritt, and Crutchfield give the songs a sense of solidarity and community that pulses through the chaos.
