Superchunk's Here's Where the Strings Come In is the moment the Chapel Hill indie rock lifers balanced their trademark speed with something bigger and more bittersweet.
Released in 1995 as the band's fifth album, it came out on Merge Records, the label Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance founded and still run. With Jim Wilbur on guitar and Jon Wurster on drums, the lineup was locked in, and the sessions at Fort Apache in Boston caught them at a creative high, sharpened by years of relentless touring.
Opener "Hyper Enough" is pure adrenaline, a fizzing, nervy anthem that later turned up in film and video game soundtracks. "Detroit Has a Skyline" barrels forward on chiming, overdriven guitars and McCaughan's yearning yelp, while "Silver Leaf and Snowy Tears" shows how much melody the band could cram between bursts of feedback. Every song feels built for shouting along in a sweaty club.
Underneath the noise, the songs are full of longing and wry humour, and Ballance and Wurster give every one of them a rock-solid, propulsive spine, while Wilbur's second guitar fills the gaps with shimmer and grit.
For anyone raised on nineties college radio, this remains one of the defining records of its era, as urgent and heartfelt now as it was then.
