Love Kraft turns 20 this year, Super Furry Animals at their most gorgeously overproduced, spread across 2LP for the anniversary.
By 2005 the Welsh band had already spent a decade proving that psychedelic pop could absorb pretty much anything without losing its footing, techno, prog, Beach Boys harmony, all of it filtered through Gruff Rhys' deadpan warmth. This record leaned harder into lush, orchestrated arrangement than anything they'd made before, strings and layered vocals stacked into something closer to widescreen soft rock than the band's earlier, spikier material. It confused some longtime fans at the time and has aged into one of their most quietly loved records since.
Zoom! opens the album on exactly the cosmic, unhurried scale the whole record commits to. Lazer Beam is the closest thing here to a proper single, a genuine hook wrapped in strange production choices that never once threaten to sand it down. Walk You Home carries real tenderness without tipping into sentimentality, and Cloudberries closes the record on its most patient, atmospheric note, letting the arrangement do the work rather than reaching for a big finish.
Twenty years on, this is the SFA record that rewards patience most. Turns out the maximalist instincts were worth trusting.
