On Jupiter catches Sun Ra in one of his most approachable moods, beaming disco funk and cosmic soul down from the outer planets in 1979.
Originally issued on his own El Saturn label, the album belongs to a remarkable late-1970s run alongside Lanquidity, Sleeping Beauty and Strange Celestial Road, when the Arkestra leader soaked up the funk, soul and dance-floor sounds of the day and bent them into his own peculiar shape. Some copies even carried a different title, Seductive Fantasy, which only adds to its mystique among collectors.
The short title track "On Jupiter" is gentle and dreamy, with June Tyson's voice gliding over the band like a radio signal from deep space. "UFO" is the party piece, a strutting disco-funk groove driven by a fat bass line, chanted ensemble vocals and stinging solos from guitar and John Gilmore's tenor saxophone. Then "Seductive Fantasy" stretches out for well over a quarter of an hour, a hypnotic bass ostinato carrying Sun Ra's keyboards through spacious, searching improvisation.
It is a terrific doorway into a famously sprawling catalog, groovy enough for the curious and strange enough for the faithful. Few records make the trip from Saturn to the dance floor sound this effortless, and fewer still make it this much fun.
