Do The Impossible gathers the music behind the PBS documentary about Sun Ra, a 2026 soundtrack that maps one of jazz's most visionary minds across two purple LPs.
How do you document a musician who presented himself as a myth, an envoy from Saturn as much as a bandleader? The film wrestles with that question, and this companion follows suit, weaving spoken introductions and archival readings between performances that run from his early Chicago years, including doo-wop he championed with The Cosmic Rays, through the space-bound Arkestra.
Early landmarks such as "Angels & Demons at Play" and "Sunology" reveal the swing and exotica roots, while "Interplanetary Music" points the band firmly toward the stars. Later material brings June Tyson's commanding voice to the fore, including an abridged "Space Is the Place", the chant that became his signature.
Contemporary voices Moor Mother and Fred Moten contribute readings, linking his philosophy to the artists and thinkers he continues to inspire. The sequencing plays like a guided tour, short enough in places to tease and long enough elsewhere to let the Arkestra take off.
As both a primer and a companion to the film, it captures the humour, ambition and sheer strangeness of an artist who treated the impossible as simply the next destination.
