Sum 41's All Killer No Filler is pop-punk with its tongue firmly in its cheek, the 2001 full-length debut that made four friends from Ajax, Ontario, MTV regulars.

Deryck Whibley and company arrived just as pop-punk was going stadium-sized, and they brought a scrappier, goofier energy to the party, splicing in metal riffs, rap verses and a sense of humour that never took itself too seriously. Producer Jerry Finn, fresh from his work with Blink-182, gave the whole thing a crisp, radio-ready punch.

Fat Lip is the generational anthem, a rap-punk hybrid about not fitting in that still gets a room jumping, and In Too Deep is a sun-bleached singalong with a hook built for summer. Motivation adds a sneering bounce, while Introduction to Destruction kicks the album off with a heavy, tongue-in-cheek blast. Most songs are over in about three minutes, which is exactly the point: get in, cause trouble, get out.

More than two decades later, it remains a snapshot of skate parks, burned CDs and suburban rebellion at the turn of the millennium. Few records capture that era's restless fun quite so well, and on vinyl it still sounds like the best afternoon of your teenage years, played as loud as possible.
