Long before the banjos and the state albums, Sufjan Stevens made Enjoy Your Rabbit, a gleefully odd electronic record pressed here as a colored double LP.
Released in 2001 on Asthmatic Kitty, the label he co-founded, it followed his folk-leaning debut A Sun Came with a sharp left turn: fourteen mostly instrumental pieces built from synths and programmed beats, loosely organised around the animals of the Chinese zodiac. It came before Michigan and Illinois made him an indie favourite, and it hints at the electronic sprawl he would return to on The Age of Adz. Its melodies proved sturdy enough to be reworked for string quartet as Run Rabbit Run in 2009.
"Year of the Asthmatic Cat" sets the playful tone, and pieces like "Year of the Dragon" and "Year of the Rooster" layer bright, chiming melodies over skittering, homemade rhythms that reward headphones. "Year of Our Lord" closes the cycle with a title that hints at the faith-shaped songwriting to come.
Overlooked by many but adored by devoted fans, Enjoy Your Rabbit is Sufjan at his most experimental and mischievous. On two colored discs, it sounds as curious and inventive as ever, a hidden corner of a remarkable catalogue that deserves far more visitors.
