Somewhere in the Between captures Streetlight Manifesto at full horn-blasting tilt, the New Jersey band's 2007 album returning as a reissue on coloured vinyl.
Led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Tomas Kalnoky, Streetlight had already carved out a cult following by the time this record landed, following their 2006 re-recording of Keasbey Nights. Here they refined and expanded the sound of their debut, delivering a tighter, more polished set without sacrificing an ounce of speed. Lyrically, Kalnoky kept wrestling with cynicism, faith and perseverance, wrapping big ideas inside rapid-fire verses.
"We Will Fall Together" opens the record and remains one of the band's most beloved songs, a defiant anthem carried by a wall of brass and a singalong chorus built for sweaty basement shows. "Would You Be Impressed?" and "Watch It Crash" keep the pace frantic and the horn lines dizzying, while "Down, Down, Down to Mephisto's Cafe" spins a darkly playful tale with real theatrical flair. Across ten songs, the rhythm section never lets up and the arrangements reward every repeat listen.
For plenty of ska punk fans this is the band's finest hour, and it is easy to hear why. Turn it up loud and try to keep still.
