99 Songs of Revolution: Vol. 1 is Streetlight Manifesto's gloriously eclectic covers record, a 2010 ska-punk mixtape running from Radiohead to NOFX, reissued here on colored vinyl.
The idea was enormous: 99 songs spread across eight albums by four related acts, including Tomas Kalnoky's acoustic collective Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. This fourth Streetlight album was the opening instalment, and it remains the only volume released to date, which has only added to its legend. Kalnoky recorded and mixed it himself, and the band's horn-driven attack turns every borrowed song into something unmistakably theirs.
The choices are delightfully unpredictable. Radiohead's "Just" gets the full horn-section treatment, NOFX's "Linoleum" and The Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl" nod to punk heroes, and The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" closes the album reimagined at ska-punk speed. Paul Simon turns up twice, Bad Religion and Squirrel Nut Zippers get their turns, and Mason Jennings opens proceedings.
Every arrangement is packed with tight brass and Kalnoky's rapid-fire vocals, and the joy of a band playing songs it loves comes through in every bar, from the quietest verse to the loudest chorus.
For Streetlight devotees, it is a fan favourite, and a hugely fun way in for newcomers.
