Stone Temple Pilots silenced plenty of doubters with Purple, the 1994 follow-up that proved Core was no fluke, presented here in remastered form on vinyl.

Recorded with producer Brendan O'Brien, the album found Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz loosening up after the heavy slab of their debut. The grunge tag that followed them never quite fit, and Purple made the case plainly, leaning into swinging, glam-tinged riffs, splashes of psychedelia and songs built to outlast their moment.

Meatplow kicks the door open with real swagger, and Vasoline follows on a tight, coiled riff and Weiland's slurred, hypnotic delivery. Interstate Love Song rides a bright, jangling guitar line into one of the great rock choruses of the decade, while Big Empty drifts from a hazy, unhurried verse into a full-band surge.

The DeLeo brothers are the quiet secret weapon throughout, melodic and inventive, heavier when the song needs it and never loud simply for the sake of it. Weiland, meanwhile, sounds like a singer finally comfortable in his own skin.

This remaster brings fresh clarity to O'Brien's warm, punchy production, a welcome way to revisit the album that turned a band of contenders into one of the defining rock acts of the nineties.
