Stone Temple Pilots arrived fully formed on Core, their 1992 debut, heard here in a remastered edition that gives those riffs fresh muscle.
Formed in Southern California around singer Scott Weiland, brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz, the band signed to Atlantic and teamed up with producer Brendan O'Brien. Core landed in the thick of the grunge boom, and while some critics were quick to lump them in with the Seattle crowd, listeners heard a band with its own knack for melody, swagger and enormous hooks. The album became a huge seller and launched one of the defining rock acts of the decade.
The songs carry real weight. "Plush" is the moody, slow-burning centerpiece, built on Dean DeLeo's lush chord work and Weiland's rich, brooding baritone. "Sex Type Thing" stomps with a sneering, sludgy riff, "Wicked Garden" surges with restless energy, and "Creep" offers a quieter, acoustic-tinged moment of self-doubt that shows how much range the band had from the very start.
Core still sounds lean and muscular, with Robert DeLeo's bass lines locking tight with Kretz's drumming throughout. This remaster sharpens every detail without losing the grit, making it an easy pick for anyone building a proper 1990s rock shelf.
