Stereolab's Peng! is the debut that started it all, a 1992 record where fuzzy guitars meet cool, cosmopolitan pop and the band's whole universe begins to take shape.
Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier formed the group after Gane's previous band, McCarthy, split up, and Peng! captures them in an early, scrappier lineup with Joe Dilworth on drums and Martin Kean on bass. The album's title is a German comic-book word for a bang, and the cover comes from a strip printed in a Swiss underground paper in 1970. Panels from that same strip turned up across early Stereolab sleeves and became lasting icons for fans.
Musically, it leans harder on fuzz guitar than the lounge-tinged records that followed, with Farfisa organ and Moog synthesizer humming beneath the noise. Super Falling Star opens the album on a repetitive, propulsive pulse with a clear debt to German kosmische rock, Perversion piles drone upon drone until the song seems to hover, and Stomach Worm settles into a hypnotic, looping groove.
Sadier's calm, unhurried voice, moving between English and French, is already the secret weapon.
For fans who came in through the later records, this is the fascinating ground floor, loud and lo-fi and full of ideas the band would spend the next decade refining.
