Squeeze's Play finds Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook in reflective, richly melodic form on a 1991 album Tilbrook saw as the start of a creative renaissance, here as a limited double LP.
Made for Reprise, their only album for the label, Play was also the band's first record as a four-piece, with Keith Wilkinson on bass and Gilson Lavis on drums. Producer Tony Berg surrounded them with a stellar supporting cast, including Steve Nieve on keyboards and Bruce Hornsby on accordion, while Bob Clearmountain's mix gives the songs a warm, polished glow. Even the liner notes were written as a play, weaving the lyrics into a theatrical script.
"Crying in My Sleep" shows off Tilbrook's gift for aching, soaring melodies, and "Sunday Street," the lead single, highlights Difford's knack for vivid, everyday character sketches in classic Squeeze style. "The Day I Get Home" swells with the help of a choir, a lovely moment of uplift. The fourth side gathers non-album single tracks from the era, including "Laughing in My Sleep."
Often overlooked next to the band's breakthrough records, Play stands as one of Squeeze's most mature and satisfying records. Listeners who know only the band's early singles have a real treat waiting here, and a warmer, deeper side of Squeeze to discover.
