Spoon's Telephono is where the Austin band first plugged in and turned up, a wiry 1996 debut that already hints at the precision to come.
Long before the lean, minimalist pop of their later records made them indie rock favourites, Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno were part of a scrappy trio playing fast, angular songs around Texas. Telephono, released on Matador, drew plenty of comparisons to the Pixies and Wire, and while those touchpoints are easy to hear, Daniel's instinct for a hook and his clipped, cool delivery were already his own.
Don't Buy The Realistic opens the record in a burst of nervy guitar and attitude, and All The Negatives Have Been Destroyed keeps the pressure up with jagged riffs and tightly coiled tension. Idiot Driver bristles with impatience, while Towner shows the band could ease off the throttle without losing its edge.
Fourteen songs, most of them brisk and wound tight, make for a record that rewards being played loud from start to finish. The sound is raw and dry, letting every chord and snare hit land with a satisfying snap.
For fans who know Spoon through Kill The Moonlight or Gimme Fiction, this is the origin story, scrappy, smart and full of nervous energy.
