Spoon's A Series of Sneaks is the wiry, nervy 1998 album that should have launched the Austin band and instead very nearly sank them.

Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno had left Matador for Elektra, hoping a major label could carry their angular indie rock further. It didn't work out. Produced by John Croslin with the band, the album sold poorly, and Spoon were dropped only months after its release. Daniel channeled the frustration into a pair of songs aimed squarely at the A&R man who had signed them, but this album is the real revenge, a lean blueprint for everything they would do next.

The songs are short and fiercely economical. Metal Detektor rides a twitchy, jagged riff, and The Minor Tough snaps along with Daniel's clipped, half-sneered delivery. 30 Gallon Tank, the longest song here, lets the tension simmer before it boils over, while Car Radio is over in a flash, all wired energy and spiky guitar. Eno's drumming is tight and unfussy throughout, already laying the rhythmic foundation that would define the band.

Heard today, A Series of Sneaks sounds like the moment Spoon found their voice, minimal and tightly wound. It's an essential stop for anyone who loves Kill the Moonlight or Gimme Fiction and wants to hear where that spare style began.
