Second Thoughts (Expanded Edition) revisits the 1976 album that carried Split Enz from New Zealand to London, now stretched across two LPs.
The band's second studio album was recorded at Basing Street Studios with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera producing, and it became their first release in Europe and North America, where it appeared under the title Mental Notes. Four songs were fresh recordings of material from their Australasia-only debut, which, confusingly, carried that same title. This edition uses the Australia and New Zealand sleeve and pairs the remastered original album with a second LP of rarities.
The writing partnership of Phil Judd and Tim Finn is at its most theatrical here. "Late Last Night" opens with jittery charm, "Stranger Than Fiction" sprawls across seven restless, shape-shifting minutes, and "Matinee Idyll" is a delicate chamber piece with violin and cello. Eddie Rayner's keyboards add color everywhere, while Noel Crombie's percussion keeps things playfully off balance.
The companion LP, Wide Angle Enz, gathers live recordings from Ormond Hall alongside archival rough mixes, including a previously unreleased rough mix of "129 (Matinee Idyll)".
Fifty years on, it is a vivid snapshot of a band still finding its shape, and a rewarding deep dig for anyone who loves their art rock eccentric.
