SPELLLING’s most personal album yet, Portrait of My Heart, is a shimmering, shape-shifting blend of raw emotion and refined avant-pop. Chrystia Cabral steps out from behind the allegories, giving us a deeply vulnerable, direct, and undeniably magnetic collection of songs.
The title track hits hard with a defiant chorus—“I don’t belong here”—anchored by a driving rhythm section that crackles with urgency. “Mount Analogue,” a duet with Chaz Bear (Toro y Moi), drips with dreamy tension, while “Alibi” leans into fuzzy, riff-heavy territory thanks to Turnstile’s Pat McCrory. And then there’s “Drain,” slow, sludgy, and totally hypnotic, courtesy of Zulu’s Braxton Marcellous.
With lush contributions from her tight-knit band and producers like Rob Bisel and Psymun, this record finds Cabral energized, expressive, and fully in control.
