Sparks Live on the Moon is exactly the kind of joke only Ron and Russell Mael could pull off: a double live album supposedly beamed in from a lunar crater.
Remarkably, it is the band's first full concert album, arriving in 2026 after more than five decades of genre-hopping pop genius. The performances were captured on their 2025 tour behind MAD!, though the official story insists on a one-off show at the Taruntius Crater on the moon. Cate Blanchett plays along as a lunar master of ceremonies, introducing and closing the set with suitably straight-faced glamour.
The setlist spans their whole career across twenty songs. "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" still sounds gloriously unhinged, Russell's falsetto soaring over Ron's deadpan keyboard stabs. "The Number One Song in Heaven" builds into a euphoric disco rush, while "Beat the Clock" keeps the dancefloor energy high. "The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte" proves their recent material sits easily alongside the classics, wry and irresistibly catchy.
The Maels sound playful and fully in command, as theatrical and as precise as they have ever been.
Half a century of brilliant weirdness, two LPs, one implausible venue: the joyful, slightly absurd spectacle of Sparks on stage, wherever that stage happened to be.
