Sonny Clark's final album as a leader, Leapin' and Lopin', returns as a 180-gram Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition, one of the label's most soulful hard bop dates.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1961 with Alfred Lion producing, the album was released in 1962, by which time Clark had become one of Blue Note's most dependable pianists, both as a leader and a sideman. He died within a year of its release, which gives this graceful, confident session an added poignancy.

Clark leads a superb quintet with Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Clark's own "Somethin' Special" and "Voodoo" show off his gift for catchy, blues-soaked themes and his relaxed, conversational touch at the keys, while Turrentine's "Midnight Mambo" adds a playful Latin lilt and Warren contributes a tune of his own.

Ike Quebec steps in on tenor for the ballad "Deep in a Dream", giving the record a tender, smoky interlude. Throughout, Clark's playing is lyrical and quietly inventive, never showy but always swinging with real purpose and warmth.

It is a beautifully balanced record from a musician who left us far too soon, and a natural fit for any Blue Note shelf.
