The Real Folk Blues gathers some of the sharpest sides Sonny Boy Williamson cut for Chess, presented in the Chess 75 Series on 180-gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
First compiled in 1966, the set draws on Chicago sessions from 1957 to 1964, when the harmonica great known to many as Rice Miller was turning out wry, slow-burning records for the Chess family of labels. Marshall Chess assembled it as part of the label's Real Folk Blues series, which also spotlighted Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.
The supporting cast reads like a Chicago blues hall of fame. Otis Spann and Lafayette Leake take turns at the piano, Willie Dixon holds down the bass, and Robert Lockwood Jr. and Luther Tucker weave guitar lines around Sonny Boy's harp. "One Way Out" features a young Buddy Guy on guitar and later became a staple for the Allman Brothers Band, while Dixon's "Bring It On Home" would be reworked by Led Zeppelin. "Checkin' Up on My Baby" shows off his conversational, needling vocal style.
Every track runs under three minutes, packed with sly humour and harmonica that speaks as clearly as his voice.
For blues collectors, it is a compact and essential portrait of one of the music's great characters.
