Collaborations on the record involve a range of talents such as Q-Tip, Kelly Rowland, The Dream, BJ The Chicago Kid, Kelela, Tweet, Moses Sumney, Sean Nicholas Savage, Nia Andrews, Devonté Hynes, Kelsey Lu, and John Carroll Kirby. A few years after the release of her second studio album, 'Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams' (2008), Knowles began to create her next musical venture. However, the pressure of crafting her third album resulted in burnout due to the amount of time and feeling she put into it. Writing for the album began as early as 2008, while the albums recording sessions took part from 2013 to June 2016. It resulted in emotionally rich and cathartic tracks like the GRAMMY-winning "Cranes In The Sky" and "Don't Touch My Hair" featuring Sampha. Profoundly complex stories wrapped in velvety softness.
