Sixty years after forming in Canterbury, Soft Machine are still pushing outward, and Thirteen, their thirteenth studio album, spreads thirteen new pieces across a double vinyl set.
Released in 2026, it is the first full album from the current quartet of guitarist John Etheridge, saxophonist and flautist Theo Travis, fretless bassist Fred Thelonious Baker and drummer Asaf Sirkis, the band's newest member. Travis produced the sessions, recorded over a few days at Temple Music Studios in Surrey, and wrote six of the tracks himself. The result covers remarkable ground, from free group improvisation to rock workouts and tender, unhurried ballads.
The Longest Night is the centrepiece, a thirteen-minute epic with guest Pete Whittaker on organ and even a gong in the mix. Open Road stretches out in a similar spirit, while Waltz for Robert offers a lighter, lilting turn. The closer, Daevid's Special Cuppa, is a lovely piece of history: it is built around a glissando guitar part recorded years earlier by the late founding member Daevid Allen, wrapped in soprano sax, guitar and the haunting Armenian duduk over a hypnotic, tribal rhythm.
For a band whose name is shorthand for adventurous British jazz-rock, Thirteen shows the machine still runs hot, and on two discs the long pieces have all the room they need.
