Pressed on limited 180 gram clear vinyl across two LPs in a gatefold jacket, this Holland import of Sueño Stereo gives Soda Stereo's final studio album the room it deserves.
Released in 1995, the record found Gustavo Cerati, Zeta Bosio and Charly Alberti chasing something dreamier and stranger than the stadium rock that had made them icons. Cerati and Bosio produced it themselves, recording at Supersónico in Buenos Aires before heading to London for the final mix, and it is often ranked among the most important alternative rock albums ever made in Spanish.
The Beatles' Revolver hangs over the whole project, from the colours of the cover to the hypnotic lead single "Ella Usó Mi Cabeza Como un Revólver." Singles "Zoom" and "Disco Eterno" wrap big, bittersweet melodies in hazy layers of guitar, and "Paseando por Roma" rounds out a run of four singles drawn from the album. The closing run plays as a linked suite that Cerati compared to a little concept album, drifting toward ambient pop and shoegaze territory.
Strings, fretless bass and washes of synthesiser give everything a soft-focus glow that rewards headphones and a quiet room.
As farewells go, it is graceful and adventurous in equal measure, a band bowing out at a genuine creative peak.
